Helping Hands Charity Ride

Hi people! Its been awhile since we updated you on our events. After a long break, the new semester just started! And here goes our first event of the semester.

Helping Hands Charity Ride is a charity program organized by AFTAS in collaboration with SMF, ABACCS and APACS for our Accounting students to learn the value of helping out & giving to others. Besides the students, the staff and alumni of Faculty of Accountancy also participated in this event. We went to Pusat Jagaan Al-Fikrah located in Kajang, Selangor on the 5th of April 2014.

The students gathered at Kolej Seroja at 7 am, as the bus was scheduled to leave UiTM by 8pm. Before we left, the Dean of Faculty of Accountancy, Dr Rozainun managed to stop by and gave a short speech for us since she couldn't be joining us due to certain circumstances. We appreciated her effort of coming to see us for awhile there even with her busy schedules.

The inmates of Pusat Jagaan Al-Fikrah are people with no surviving relatives, or have been neglected by their families. Some of them still talk about their families, and some tend to neglect altogether any topics regarding their families. We found out that some inmates have really great past experiences before they ended up in the care centre. When we arrived, some of us felt nervous for we did not know how to interact with them, whether its polite to talk about certain things, whether they want to talk to us, etc. However its great to see that most of our accounting students were very friendly and the inmates were very welcoming as well.  They shared a lot of amazing stories and life experiences they have. Some shared their regrets and sadness. But whatever they talked about, it didnt take long for them to feel comfortable around us.

Besides spending time with them, we also have our gotong royong session. We are all divided into several groups where each group is assigned to clean both indoor & outdoor areas, feed the chickens and ducks, arranged the ununsed furnitures, vacuum the carpets, mural painting etc. Since we came in a large group, (our team consists of around 80 students) we're glad that all of us could be of help in making the care centre a better place to live in, and reduce the burdens of the caretakers.

Before we ended our visit, all the inmates took part in the lucky draw session for special prizes. Its very lively during this one particular activity, since everyone is excited to anticipiate who gets the prizes. The lucky winners were all so happy with their prizes! :)

It was a long tiring, yet enjoyable Saturday at Pusat Jagaan Al-Fikrah. A lot of valuable lessons learnt in only one day. All of us are blessed that we are given the chance to visit them, or we'll never know how its like for some people out there.
